Chapter 3: Met A Lady

Schneider strolled back to his cottage. The town seemed more like a home to him suddenly and he felt that it was a gift that the army gave him. More freedom, relaxing life and now, he made a friend. Arendarski was warm and cheerful, he was just like Schneider’s father besides being his trustworthy friend. Every word he told Schneider was like a constructive advice……

The next morning, Schneider went to the restaurant soon after he had reported to headquarter. He hurriedly walked to the restaurant but this time, the first thing he saw when he entered the restaurant was not Arendarski , nor the tables and chairs……but a lady. A young and simple lady stood in front of his eyes.

He saw nothing interesting at first so he continued to walk to the last dining table he last used. Arendarski did not go to Schneider this time, he asked the lady there to serve him instead. Schneider thought she was just another waitress, so he did what he usually do. Later that day….after he finished his meal, Arendarski came to him with that waitress. “ This is my daughter, Helena, she is a good helper.”

“Yes….I can…see that.” Schneider stammered. Schneider stood rooted to the ground but he managed to walk silently towards his usual seat and sat there. Schneider rested for awhile, then Helena came and served him while he paid the money directly to her…..All of a sudden, the moment Schneider handed the coins to Helena….time slowed down…..A strange feeling got into Schneider’s heart….like he was back to Vienna….back to his beloved mother as a child.

Arendarski went to rest earlier that day. Schneider stayed in the restaurant till evening, he went off with a no expression on his pale face. He did not say anything nor he look at Helena when he left. The next day, Helena and him had their first conversation. They got to know each other better but they always do not have any common topic to talk about.
